President's Report
October and November have been busy for residents of Beecroft and Cheltenham, and consequently for the Trust. Beecroft's last remaining bank closed, we opened the Beecroft Gardens with a Hoop Pine planting, there was the announcement of our long awaited station lift and there was the Remembrance Day ceremony at our war memorials. The planting of the Hoop Pine in the Gardens reminded some of our residents about the loss of the 100 year old Bunya Pine that was cut down as part of the third rail track project. At the time of the felling, there were requests for the tree trunk to be saved and used in some way to benefit the local community.

I can report that Hornsby Council staff did save the tree trunk and after being in storage for 5 years, the timber has cured sufficiently for it to be used. Staff have stressed that Bunya Pine is not suitable for external use, so they have suggested that the Thornleigh Men’s Shed could construct a wooden bench to be placed in the entrance of the Beecroft Community Hall, where the ticket office is located. There is sufficient room for a bench serving a worthwhile purpose, but more importantly be permanently on display. A label about its history could be added.  Personally, I think this is a good idea. Update on the Demolition of the Oldest Heritage Listed Building in the Hornsby Shire
In September the Trust informed readers that the oldest heritage listed building had been demolished during construction of the senior's development at the corner of Pennant Hills and Copeland Roads Beecroft.
The Trust has discussed the matter with Council and has requested that we be kept informed about any progress in this matter.  At this stage we can only say that a second DA623/2018 has been lodged for the rebuilding of the cottage. This DA can be viewed at CLICK HERE. Twilight Christmas in Beecroft
Beecroft businesses invite you for a shopping evening in Beecroft. Thursday, 29^th November 2018, from 5pm.
There will be entertainment, live music and Christmas offers in the Village and Beecroft Place.

Remembrance Day 11am , 11^th November 2018
Remembrance Day was celebrated last Sunday at 11am in the Beecroft Gardens. The service, organised by Hornsby Lions, was well attended with over 200 in attendance. Participants included Hornsby Council, Beecroft Rotary and all the schools in the area.  Mr Damien Tudehope’s heart-felt address to the large gathering was well received. The new circular layout of the war memorials provided an ideal setting, avoiding the problems of the past with traffic on Wongala Crescent. It is the first time a service has been held with all memorials arranged together. Morning tea was provided in the Community Hall after the service.
School Crossing Supervisors at Beecroft Public School
If you happen to be passing by one morning, smile and say hello.

Karen is one of our two valuable crossing supervisors at Beecroft Public School.  She looks after the kids crossing Copeland Rd as it bisects Beecroft Rd.  Her watchful eye has been working for the community for nearly 27 years.  I asked  why she loved her job so much that she has been doing it for so long.  She answered that she loves the children and her interaction with them.  When she had to go to hospital for surgery, the outpouring of love was enormous.  So many cards and flowers.  Karen very generously feels that her co crossing supervisor, Graham, has a much more difficult job.  He looks after the kids crossing Copeland Rd west of Beecroft Rd.  Graham’s tour of duty has not been as long as Karen’s.  When I asked him why he chose this job, he answered that after many years as an accountant, he wanted to give back to the community. He enjoys watching the children grow and become more responsible.  Neither Karen nor Graham react immediately to a child appearing at the crossing.  The
children must learn courtesy to the motoring public and that a pedestrian crossing does not provide an invisible shield of protection.  We are fortunate to have two such admirable human beings looking after our kids as they cross busy roads.  Thank you, Karen and Graham.
Latest News on 79 Murray Farm Road Beecroft
Two weeks ago the Land and environment Court (LEC) dismissed an appeal to the refusal by Parramatta City Council for a senior’s housing development at 79 Murray Farm Road. There were about ten objections to the development, including objections from the Trust. This refusal by the Court is in contrast to the recent approvals for senior’s development under Hornsby Council’s control. Perhaps there are lessons to be learnt from this judgement. “Nuclear energy – the elephant in the room” is the speaker’s topic at the next monthly meeting of the club at the Beecroft Bowling Club, Copeland Road - 10.00 am. Monday 26^th November.
All sides are silent on the nuclear option - the one source of energy that is capable of both base load generation and almost zero emissions. Why is this when Australia hosts 33% of the world’s uranium and is the world’s third largest producer of the mineral?

Disabled Access to Beecroft Station
Readers would be aware of the special eNews we sent out last week, requesting residents to voice their support for disabled access to Beecroft station. The Trust felt that it would be in the public interest that, in addition to the two lifts, a ramp be retained in Wongala Crescent instead of the proposed series of steps. The Trust approached Hornsby Council seeking their opinion to the idea. Council, to their credit, supported the idea of the ramp being retained and have since been in serious discussions with the TNSW project managers on how to achieve a satisfactory solution.
